New to Me Books

Does anyone else use any type of magazine to find new books? I read the Advance at my bookstore, which is a monthly publication of new books coming out, being released in all formats. My bookstore lady actually goes through it every order day (once a week) and who ever rights their name next to a book, she orders it for you. Which is nice, because she gives a 20% off discount on all new books she orders.

I also read the Romantic Times Reviews. I love that magazine and thought for the longest time that it was the only thing out there like it, and was sad that it was only romances (though I love them, and it now has a mainstream fiction section!).

But the other day I was at Barnes and Noble looking at magazines (since my vow to no longer buy books unless they are absolutely must haves) and found another magazine for people like me! It's called Bookmarks: For Everyone Who Hasn't Read Everything. It's an awesome magazine and I've only looked at half of it and found 3 books to add to my TBR.

I also use the very small section in Entertainment Weekly to find books. Usually there's at least one I'm interested in, but I'm easily interested LOL.

So, over the last few days I've found a few books in these magazines that I've added to my ever growing TBR mountain. They are titled as follows:

I'm Sorry You Feel That Way: The Astonishing but True story of a Daughter, sister, Slut, Wife, Mother and Friend to Man and Dog by Tina Jordan

Doghead by Morten Ramsland

The Worst Hard Time: The Untold Story of Those Who Survived the Great American Dustbowl by Timothy Egan

Down and Out In the Great Depression:Letters From The Forgotten Man edited by Robert S. McElvaine

Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl by Harriet Jacobs

I have many more pages to look through and am excited to do so. Finding new books to read is almost as much fun as reading them!

  1. I loved Harriet Jacobs. Read her for a class but totally would've done so freely and willingly otherwise.

  2. I'm Sorry You Feel That Way sounds cool. And it looks beautiful too.

  3. Steph Su, Thanks for the great comment about Harriet Jacobs, I'll make sure to let you know what I think. I saw when looking it up that there is a Sparknotes for it, does this mean that it has the potential to be a harder read?

Doesn't it!? I thought it looked like great fun. I want to start reading more memoirs and biographies. I have always believed that every persons life can be entertaining to someone.

  4. I'm Sorry You Feel That Way is sounds good! I definitely had to add that to my TBR (=

  5. I read the Romantic Times Magazine too. That's about it for magazines though. The rest come from amazing bloggers like you!

  6. Mishel, Glad I could recommend yet another book for the TBR. We book friends are bad influences aren't we??

Jessica, Thanks so much for the compliment, it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. I was so excited when I discovered the Romantic Times. It's a staple of my book reading pleasure now. ::grins::

  7. I subscribed to Bookmarks last year and have not regretted it one bit! I look forward to every issue. I also subscribe to The Strand to keep up with mysteries. As a librarian, I regularly review the book reviews and pre-pub alerts in Library Journal. The side effect of all of this is the continuous building of my out of control TBR tower.

  8. Terri,
I think I will gift myself a subscription of Bookmarks, that or see if I can get my UBS to start ordering it for me.

We love comments! Please feel free to tell us anything we make you want to say!! :D
